many would say freeing the Jews from slavery which was important, but i lean toward being the mediator of the covenant between God and the Jews. That provided the line for the messiah, established many of the standards of morals we hold dear, and gave us the view of how God would interact with people who he claimed as his.

His greatest achievement was the delivering of the Torah from God (Exodus 24:12) to the Israelites (Deuteronomy 31:24).

His other accomplishments, including the Exodus, were secondary to the above.

Moses was an Israelite, a great-great grandson of Jacob. He was born 245 years after the death of Abraham. The time when Moses was born was when the Pharaoh had ordered his people to kill all Israelite male infants because he (Pharaoh) was afraid that the Israelites would become too strong for him (Exodus ch.1-2).

Moses' mother didn't want him to die. So she made a basket for him and put him in it to float in the Nile reeds. He was found by Pharaoh's daughter, who took pity on him (Exodus ch.2) and raised him as her own son. (See: How did Moses know he was an Israelite?)

Moses was forced to flee after killing a cruel Egyptian taskmaster, and went to Midian, where he wedded the daughter of Jethro.

He eventually achieved the highest level of prophecy (Deuteronomy ch.34) and was called upon by God (Exodus ch.3). He brought the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery (Exodus ch.12). He received the Torah from God (Exodus 24:12) and later recorded it in writing (Deuteronomy 31:24). He went up on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights (Deuteronomy ch.9-10) and brought down the Two Stone Tablets with the Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18). He brought the Israelites into the covenant with God (Exodus ch.19 and ch.24), and he oversaw the building of the Tabernacle (Exodus ch.35-40). He was the humblest of men and the greatest of prophets (Numbers ch.12).

On the biblical account, there are many achievements that could be regarded as Moses' greatest, including:

  • Bringing down ten plagues on the entire Egyptian nation
  • Leading the Israelites, numbering at least two and a half million people, out of Egypt unscathed
  • Holding the nation together for forty years wandering in the wilderness
  • Defeating the army of Amaleks merely by holding his staff above his head until the sun went down
  • Receiving the Ten Commandments from God
  • Living to the incredible age of 127 years and being strong and of sound mind until the very end.
  • Writing the five books of the Pentateuch
Modern scholars say that none of these events actually occurred, in fact, most scholars say the Moses of The Bible never really lived, although behind the biblical story there might have been an escaped Egyptian slave who was rescued in the Sinai desert by the Midianites, and later travelled north to rejoin his compatriots in Judah. Scholars almost unanimously recognise the Pentateuch as the work of multiple sources, writing around a thousand years after Moses supposedly lived: what they wrote was legend, not history.

Why is Abraham the main prophet in Judaism?

Abraham is not the main prophet of Judaism. Abraham was not regarded as a prophet. Judaism, unlike Christianity and Islam, does not have a main prophet. Moses is often considered the greatest prophet because of his achievement and his closeness to God. All prophets after Moses are said to have only glimpsed what Moses saw.
