Baum couldn't think of a name for it at first but he was looking at his file cabinets and saw one with A-N an O-Z. An didn't sound right but Oz did. So the Land became known as Oz. You can find this in one of the special features on The Wizard of Oz dvd. :)

The Wizard of Oz was from Omaha, Nebraska. As a young man, he had been a ventriloquist. Then he became interested in hot air balloons. And one day his balloon strayed away from the skies over Omaha, and ended up a full day and a morning later in the beautiful, enchanted, magical lands of Oz. Despite the beauty of the land, and the respect of the people, he wanted to get back home. For he had grown old in his Emerald Palace, and daily feared being found out for the humbug magician that he really was.
