More Information:

Modern methods of obtaining sodium metal, are based on the process invented by Sir Humphry Davy in 1806. Basically, Davy's process consisted of the electrolysis of molten sodium hydroxide. There were improvements in efficiency and cost to this process, and beginning in 1926 to today, most of the sodium produced, results from the use of a Downs cell (1924). This method involves the electrolysis of a molten mixture of sodium and calcium chlorides (salt). Liquid sodium gathers at the cathode, and being the least dense of the mixture, rises to the top of the tank and is drained off and collected. The by-product, Chlorine gas, collects at the anode and is vented and collected to avoid pollution of the atmosphere. This is not a major source of chlorine.

It's made. It's an industrial product. As sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a caustic chemical, it will react with stuff if it can. That's why it isn't found in nature. World production is on the order of 50 million tonnes per year, and this compound is used in soap, paper production, industrial cleaners and even food production. It's a staple in the manufacturing sector. Wikipedia has a nice article. And you got a link. Surf on over and check it out.
