The first Academy Award Ceremony was May 16, 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. It was a banquet and 270 people attended. Tickets cost $15.00* and Academy President, Douglas Fairbanks presided over the ceremony. It was a small event; nothing like it is today but of course, evolved in the coming years to what it is today.
Louis B,Mayer the owner of the MGM studios was the main person to moot an idea of the Academy, Mayer invited Fred Niblo & Conrad Nagel & Pres of the motion-pics Producers Fred Beetson to meet on a Sunday. After this meeting 36 Hollywood professionals were invited to a formal banquet at the Ambassador Hotel on Jan11,1927. All members present were made the founding members, which Mayer 1st called the American Academy of Motion Pic Arts & Science which his lawyers changed to Academy of Motion Pics.
The 1st President elected Douglas Fairbanks Sr added the event of bestowing Awards of Merit to be awarded for distinctive achiever's later to be voted & nominated by the Academy members, is now what we call the Oscars or the Academy Awards.
*The Tickets for the 1st ever Academy Awards were $5 per invitee and not $15 as stated in the 1st paragraph.
