Major Lanoe G. Hawker VC (1890-1916) was the first British ace, the commander of the first British fighter squadron and the first airman to receive the Victoria Cross. He was significant for many contributions to military aviation at the beginning of World War I, including everything from aviators boots, portable hangers, ring gun sights and gun mounts. He also was involved in many heroic actions, including the bombing of the Zeppelin sheds at Gontrode and the seven aerial victories for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died 23 November, 1916 , at the age of 25, in a dogfight with Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron.
