Hitler wanted to control Europe. Japan wanted to control the Pacific. The feeling was that if the Allies were busy on two war fronts, they would be far weaker giving both Germany AND Japan a better chance to win.

Japan was concerned with creating its own empire, which it called the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Japan had no real interest in the success of the Third Reich, to which it was only loosely allied, however England, which was a colonial power in Asia, and the US, which was (and remains) a great naval power, were both seen as obstacles to Japanese ambitions, so it was logical for Japan to ally itself with the enemies of England and the US.
