it is believed that laxmi visits earth on amavasya of kartik month so people decorate their homes and worship her so that her blessings bring prosperity to the family.there is an interesting story behind it.once a crow stole a diamond necklace of a king and king announced that the person who brings it back would be granted a wish. abeggar could bring it back and he asked the king to announce in his kingdom that no lights should be put on in any house on amavasya of kartik except a diya in his hut. the king easily granted thewish .onthat day when laxmi came on earth she passed by the kingdom and could see only one lamp in that beggar's hut so she moved to his house and to the surprise of everyone the very nextmorning the beggar became richer than the king. this is how practise of worshipping laxmi and lighting diyas on Diwali night became popular
