These were assault troops trained in squads as trench fighters.

In 1921 Hitler's henchman,Ernst Rohm created a 2000 strong para-military force of stormtroopers,"Sturmabteilungen" (storm section) or S.A.also known as Brownshirts. They kept order with their fists at Nazi meetings, disrupted those of opponents and kept the party in the public eye. Most recruits were unemployed social misfits, disaffected former servicemen or thugs. By 1934 membership had risen to 2 million, but was severely purged in June '34 in what became known as "The night of the long knives".

In the early years of formation of the Nazi part in the 1930's, the "Brown Shirts" were the muscle men of the party. They were the known as the SA and wore brown shirts and hats.

Later, the SS became more powerful and became the security forces. They were called the "Black Shirts". The SS wore black uniforms and were seen marching in "goose steps" in many of the early pre-War newsreels.

In actuality, "storm troops" were a term that developed in WW1. The storm troops were also known as Assault Troops and were a heavily armed soldiers who were used to punch through the trench lines to initiate a break-through of the enemy lines.

SA is the Schutz Abteilung & the SS is the Schutz Staffel.

Sturmtruppen was the German word for Stormtroopers. This special type of troop was used in conjuction with tanks for Blitzkreig advances and raiding missions.

Comment. Hitler's SS were never called 'blackshirts'. This term was used for Mussolini's Fascist Militia, and Moseley's British Union of Facsists.
