Borax does kill cockroaches, it takes a few days to start working. the two popular methods seem to be apply a fine powder to areas the cockroaches frequent. They walk through it then lick it off their legs, as they are fastidious groomers. The alternative method is to make baits, mixing borax with flour, sugar, cocoa etc.
The mechanism of action seems unclear, but most reports seem to attribute some form of dehydration.
It always starts with just a few but then we suddenly found ourselves with a huge cockroach problem, an outright infestation. We spent tons of money on traps and sprays, which absolutely DO NOT work to get rid of them. These remedies are messy, expensive and only kill a few. They keep coming back. We used powered borax (Mule Team) which was easy to find at the grocery store and super cheap. We have animals so we worried a bit, but we put that borax on every counter, along every floorboard and in every cabinet. It took maybe two weeks to completely eradicate the roaches, but within a few days we were already getting relief. It was like a miracle. We left the borax around for a month just to be sure we got them all, but since borax is a cleaner it was easy to clean up. It's been months and the roaches are still gone. I can't believe it took me less than ten dollars to do what hundreds of dollars on sprays, etc. never did. Incidentally, our animals were never harmed by this treatment. How_do_you_kill_cockroaches
