Apparantly 1st November in Ireland although it is 21st December in UK as it is the date that the sun is lowest in the sky (Winter Solstice).

'Apparantly' is a key word here.

Winter in Ireland actually starts on Winter Solstice. This could be anywhere between Dec20th and 23rd. 2010 sees Winter start on December 21st at 23:38 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time - Ireland's world time).

It is a misconception to think winter starts in November but it is common in Ireland for people to get season start dates wrong!!(Most people think Spring starts in February when it actually starts in March)

A good and reliable source for dates in Ireland is 'Old Moore's Almanac' (two types - one 314 years old and the other which comes in a green cover (maybe they're the same?) or online at the link below.

Traditionally it is the 1st of February. Meteorologists would say it starts on the 21st of March, at the Spring Equinox.
